AI app tools

When you connect an AI app, Structured AI offers it the tools below. Your AI app picks the tools it needs from what you ask, so you never have to name them. They're listed here so you know exactly what it can and can't do, and so you recognise them when your AI app asks permission to use one.

  • Read tools only look things up. Every connected app gets them.
  • Change tools change something in Structured AI. An app only gets them if your organization owner turned on Let AI apps make changes and you chose Also let it make changes when you connected. By default, each change also waits for your approval in Settings > Connected AI apps.

No tool deletes anything.

Projects and documents

ToolWhat it doesType
list_projectsLists the projects you can open, with name, location and company.Read
list_documentsLists the documents in a project, with file type, page count, processing status and folder.Read
get_documentGets one document's details: file name, page count, processing status and disciplines.Read
searchSearches the text of every PDF in a project, or of one document, and returns the matching lines by page. It also names pages whose text can't be trusted, where finding nothing proves nothing.Read
read_pageReads the text of one page.Read
see_pageLooks at one page as an image, for symbols, line work and layout that text can't capture.Read

Findings

ToolWhat it doesType
list_findingsLists the QA/QC findings on a project, or on one document, each with its cited locations.Read
get_findingOpens one finding: description, recommended solution, code references and every cited location.Read
update_finding_statusResolves, waives or reopens findings for everyone on the project, the same as the status buttons on the Issues tab.Change

Building codes

ToolWhat it doesType
search_codesSearches the building codes available to your organization and returns the matching sections.Read

Ask Structured AI

ToolWhat it doesType
ask_projectAsks the Structured AI agent a question about a whole project. It returns at once, and the answer follows.Read
ask_documentAsks the Structured AI agent a question about one document.Read
get_turn_resultChecks for the answer to a question, with its citations. A deep question can take 10 to 20 minutes.Read

While answering, the Structured AI agent only reads. The exception: if changes are allowed and you've turned on Let my connected AI apps make changes without asking me, it can make changes too, because it can't stop partway through an answer to wait for your approval.

Checks and runs

ToolWhat it doesType
list_checksFinds the checks you can run on a project: built-in checks, check groups, your organization's custom checks and saved checklists.Read
run_checksRuns checks across a whole project as one review run, the same as the Project QAQC panel.Change
launch_checklistRuns one of your organization's saved checklists on a project.Change
get_run_statusFollows a run's status and progress.Read

A check that already ran on a project isn't run again unless your AI app explicitly asks to re-run it, and a re-run replaces that check's earlier findings.

Adding files

ToolWhat it doesType
upload_documentStarts adding a file to a project, the same as the Upload button. Files can be up to 5,000 MiB.Change
complete_uploadFinishes the upload. The file is added once you approve it, and then starts processing.Change

Your AI app has to send the file itself, so adding files works from AI apps that can read files on your computer, such as Claude Code.

Approvals

ToolWhat it doesType
get_pending_actionChecks a change that is waiting for your approval: still waiting, approved, declined or expired.Read

Good to know

  • Custom checks, checklists and processing a new document may cost your organization money, the same as when you do them in the app.
  • Structured AI can turn off individual tools for an organization. If a tool you expect is missing, ask us.
  • Tool names can change as we improve them. Your AI app always gets the current list when it connects.
